As part of an ongoing effort to assist the South African Police Service in their fight against crime, the Saldanha Bay municipality installed a CCTV control room at the municipality’s traffic department.
Executive Mayor Marius Koen officially opened the control room on the 10th of October 2018.
The control room forms part of the Saldanha Bay Safety Initiative (SBSI) which was launched with asset protection and community safety as its main focus. The R1.2 million project will serve as the eyes and ears of the Vredenburg and Saldanha SAPS to improve the safety of the community in both these areas. The long-term vision of this project is to place all high-risk areas under surveillance and use it as an extended hand of the SAPS.
Currently, the water tower, Vredenburg depot, traffic department, driver’s license unit and the fire protection services are under camera surveillance. Executive Mayor Marius Koen said; “When it comes to asset protection and public safety, one should not hesitate to invest because protection and safety is not an option, it’s a priority.”
