Drop-off facilities to help reduce illegal dumping

The DA-led Drakenstein municipality is helping residents in the Mbekweni area to reduce littering and illegal dumping, prevent the spread of disease and vermin, all while increasing local employment opportunities.

The municipality will be erecting three “mini” waste drop-off facilities where littering and illegal dumping are at its worst, mainly along pedestrian walkways to commuter transport routes.

Once these waste drop-off facilities are complete, residents can dispose of their refuse at the facilities which will be cleared daily and taken to the landfill site for responsible disposal. The facilities will be managed by independent contractors whose staff are sourced from within the local community in accordance with the municipality’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The “mini” drop-offs in Mbekweni are the first of a range that will be rolled out within the municipal area over the next three years.

Acting executive mayor Gert Combrink said, “We are pleased to support local community entrepreneurship while also responding to the health and disease prevention needs of people in the area, especially mothers with young children. At the same time, we are encouraging our community to keep Drakenstein clean.”
