A City of Johannesburg Press Statement by
the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba
On the 28th of June 2019, the City of Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) released the monthly performance statistics to the public.
I was joined by the MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, and the Acting Head of the Department of Public Safety, David Tembe, as we released May’s statistics.
May, as the months before it, revealed driving under the influence to be the top crime type across the City, with 741 arrests made. In May alone, 14 arrests were made for fraud, 20 for robbery, 23 for possession or drug dealing and 37 arrests were made for possession or hijacking of stolen motor vehicles.
Our K9 Narcotics and Tactical Unit in May recovered a staggering 62 vehicles and made over 40 arrests.
Our newly established Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre (IIOC) Reaction Unit alone was able to make 40 arrests in less than 20 days. Arrests ranged from common robbery and possession of drugs or dangerous weapons to fraud and assault.
Since the launch of the Integrated Intelligence Operations Centre Reaction Unit (IOC Reaction Unit) on 14 May 2019, there has been a notable crime reduction in the Joburg inner city.
Operation Buya Mthetho continues to crack down on bylaw infringements. During the month of May, close to 9 400 illegal posters were removed and close to 230 illegal connections were removed.
The department has been compiling monthly statistics since September last year and has become a tool of reflection for officers as well as a critical step to informing our residents.
Sadly, safety remains a key concern for many of our residents. Though policing remains a provincial and national competency, per the Constitution, within its limited mandate, the City’s JMPD is working hard to increase the levels of safety within our communities.
I wish to also thank our officers working beyond the call of duty. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.
It is because of you that we are able to serve our residents with pride.
As a City, we will continue to do all that is within our power to ensure that we create safe and connected communities throughout Johannesburg. Alongside this, we will continue work with our law enforcement authorities to see to it that where arrests are made by JMPD, these cases are not only investigated but also properly prosecuted by law enforcement authorities.
