City provides dignity of homeownership to South Hills development beneficiaries

15 Aug 2019 in Where We Govern

On Thursday, 15 August 2019, Executive Mayor, City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba had the pleasure of handing over title deeds to 38 beneficiaries of the South Hills housing development, south of Johannesburg.

He was joined by the MMC for Housing, Cllr Meshack Van Wyk, as they handed over full ownership of these units.

This momentous occasion will mark the end of the 23-year wait for these beneficiaries, all of whom applied for housing in 1996. The City of Johannesburg’s Housing department also managed to ensure the beneficiaries are given full ownership within a year of being allocated to their units.

The total yield of units from South Hills is 6 204, with 408 already complete. It is comprised of RDP units, bonded rental units, community residential units and affordable social housing units.

Home ownership empowers our residents by giving them and their families the dignity of a place to call home. This multi party administration remains committed to ensuring that residents of the City of Johannesburg access safe and affordable accommodation.

The South Hills development in particular is situated along a transport node, with access to more job opportunities.  Over 90% of the units will fall within the Financial Sector Charter definition of affordable housing, contributing significantly toward the objective of Diphetogo to our communities.

We are committed to continue addressing the inherited housing backlog, which sits at over 300 000 units, which has left many of our residents without a place to truly call home.

And it is this progress and change brought about by our multiparty government which has shamed the ANC following their years of neglect, failure and corruption. This is why they are tabling a motion of no confidence against the multi-party government.

He would like to thank the members of this coalition government; the IFP, ACDP, COPE, UDM and Freedom Front Plus for their continued support.

He is also thankful for the contributions of the EFF which, although not a member of the coalition, votes on an issue by issue basis.
