Fifth mobile clinic launched to extend access to healthcare in Joburg

29 Oct 2019 in Where We Govern

On 29 October 2019, I was joined by the MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, and the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Ntombi Khumalo, as we launched yet another Mobile Clinic which will serve the community of the Inner City, Jeppestown and the surrounding areas.

This is the fifth operating mobile clinic in the City of Johannesburg, one of which was donated by PPC Cement, with five (5) more set to be rolled out to other far-reaching areas by June 2020.

As part of extending access to healthcare, the City has resolved to roll out mobile clinics to areas and communities that were, and continue to be, excluded from the health care system.

This R3.7 million project will officer the following services:

  • Chronic system treatment including HIV Counselling and testing, ART initiation, TB screening and Treatment;
  • Mother and child treatment including EPI Immunisation, integrated management of childhood diseases, and antenatal screening;
  • Family planning services including pap smears and prostate cancer screening; and,
  • Treatment of minor ailments.

Patients will be served by a capable staff, including nurses and an assistant, admin assistant, a general worker, and a driver.

To be able to reach as many of our residents in need of primary healthcare attention, the City has identified areas that will be served by the mobile clinic. Thus, a timetable has been devised to reach those who require the services on offer.

This will see the mobile clinic visit these areas during the week:

Mondays and Tuesdays

Booysens Informal Settlement

8am – 3pm

Wednesdays

George Koch Informal Settlement

8.30am – 3pm

Thursdays

Mangolongolo Informal Settlement

8.30am – 3pm

I would like to thank the members of his coalition government; the IFP, ACDP, COPE, UDM and Freedom Front Plus for their continued support in delivering quality basic services to our residents.

I am also thankful for the contributions of the EFF which, although not a member of the coalition, votes on an issue by issue basis.
