Joburg MMC for Housing delivers an additional 37 title deeds to South Hills beneficiaries

16 Oct 2019 in Where We Govern

On Tuesday, 15 October 2019, I was able to hand over title deeds to 37 beneficiaries of the South Hills housing development.

This follows the 38 deeds which were handed over in August 2019.

As a pro-poor government, one of our top priorities is fast tracking the delivery of title deeds across the City of Johannesburg. This brings real, fundamental change (Diphetogo) to residents that have been waiting for many years.

I was overwhelmed by the joy the recipients shared with me. For instance, 76-year-old Soliphi Mkhize expressed her sincere gratitude for receiving a title deed for the first time in her life. She previously had to rent a backroom in in Jeppestown but now finally has a place she can call her own. Her sentiments were echoed by Mrs. Salaze Twala (72) and Mrs. Vinah Ndwandwe (72) both living at the Georg Goch informal settlement.

The total expected yield of units from South Hills is 6 204, with 408 already complete.

It is comprised of RDP units, bonded rental units, community residential units and affordable social housing units. The development is situated along a transport node, with access to more job opportunities.  Over 90% of the units will fall within the Financial Sector Charter definition of affordable housing.

The South Hills housing development recently won an international award at the 14th United Nations Global Forum on Human Settlements in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The award recognised the South Hills housing development as a global green model community for its outstanding demonstration in promoting sustainable cities and human settlements as well as the implementation of sustainable development goals.
