JRA service delivery blitzes working to eliminate road defects backlog across Joburg

15 Oct 2019 in Where We Govern

On Tuesday , 15 October 2019, as the City of Johannesburg continues to celebrate Transport Month, I joined the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) during a service delivery blitz in Randburg, where we focused primarily on road markings and road reinstatements.

I was joined by the MMC for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba, as we engaged with the JRA’s road marking, deep patching, and signage teams. This comes after many roads have been resurfaced in Hurlingham, Victory Park and the surrounding areas, and now need to be marked.

The blitz is a visible service delivery operation on road service defects in Randburg. All teams of the hosting and surrounding Depots join in the cleaning, painting and repairing of road infrastructure.

The aim of this campaign is to eliminate road defects backlog in all regions.

Indeed, without a functioning road network system, we cannot run a modern economy. Road infrastructure is key in any city to keep business moving.

When we took over this administration in 2016, we discovered a shocking R170 billion infrastructure backlog which includes our road network. Furthermore, at that time, the City only spent around 2% of the value of our fixed assets on repairs and maintenance when National Treasury stipulates this to be at around 8% annually.

Currently, we have been able to increase this to over 4%. Although there is still work to be done, this multi-party administration has started to move our budget towards repairs and maintenance and the building of new infrastructure.

In addition, over 900km’s of an inherited 4 000km poor condition road network has been resurfaced.

Therefore I would also like to encourage residents of these and other communities to report any and all acts of vandalism and theft of our shared infrastructure.

The daily operations of JRA goes a long way in ensuring our residents are served with pride, and we cannot allow theft and vandalism to impact progress that has been made.
