Tshwane prepares for Festive Season through “Lighting up the City” intervention

The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Stevens Mokgalapa, gears up for
the Festive Season through the City’s “Lighting up the City” programme in
October 2019.

This intervention aims to ensure that residents enjoy the full benefit of
safe and well-lit neighbourhoods as the festive season approaches.

One of the challenges facing the City is electricity supply interruptions in
the form of load shedding and malfunctioning public lighting networks.

These aren’t ideal circumstances that residents should be subjected to.
Being plunged into darkness leaves residents vulnerable to criminal
elements who take advantage of low visibility.

To address this, Mayor Mokgalapa has launched an integrated approach
that entails various municipal resources being consolidated daily to focus
on targeted areas in order to make an impact before moving to the next
area.

This intervention is targeting 20 streets in the inner City.

To date, Francis Baard and Fountain Circle are 100% lit; Pretorius Street
is 75% lit while Boom, Madiba and Sophie De Bruyn are 50% lit.

The schedule will expand from Tshwane House (City’s Head Quarters) to
all the townships across the City from November 2019 to ensure all
neighbourhoods have adequate lighting during the festive period and
beyond.

While the progress of the intervention is evident, the scourge of
vandalism and theft continues to sabotage these efforts.
As such, Mayor Mokgalapa appeals to communities to report such through
the City’s law enforcement and communication channels.
