The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department is working hard to connect residents in informal settlements with electricity and has lit up Esantini in Mfuleni. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Phindile Maxiti, visited residents at Esantini informal settlement in Mfuleni yesterday, 14 November 2019.

Approximately 42 households were connected to the electricity grid this week as part of the City’s almost R570 000 electrification project in Esantini informal settlement in Mfuleni. Councillor Maxiti and Ward Councillor Themba Honono visited some of the residents who received access to electricity at their homes. Ms Nosiza Makoba and Msrs Siphosihle Yengeni were among the residents who were pleased to receive electricity in their homes.

For this electrification project to come about, there was much positive community engagement and hard work. The City sincerely thanks residents of the area.

‘I would like to commend the City’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department which is working hard to connect residents in informal settlements with electricity where allowed and possible. We will continue to make every effort to improve the lives of our residents in informal settlements through the provision of access to electricity as part of the City’s commitment to service delivery.

‘The work of this department must be seen as part of a wider approach by City departments to enhance basic services to residents. This initiative is part of the City’s commitment to excellence in basic service delivery and to improving the health and safety of its more vulnerable residents.

‘Access to electricity, where it is possible to install, is a game-changer especially for the vulnerable in our society. We remain committed to improving the lives of our residents in informal settlements,’ said Councillor Maxiti.

Numerous electrification projects, along with other basic services projects, are ongoing across the city.

According to the latest Annual Report (2017/18) 97,3% of City-supplied households have access to electricity.
