On Tuesday, 19 November 2019, I was joined by the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico de Jager, and City Power management as we launched the start of construction on the brand new Lutz substation in Honeydew, west of Johannesburg.

This R105 million substation, due to be completed within the next three years, will directly boost power supply to both business and residents of the surrounding areas.
With increased development, the electricity supply that was originally planned to feed agricultural holdings, is not meeting the current demand. I am therefore pleased to report that, upon completion, the 88/11kV Lutz substation will ensure enough capacity for current and future developments in the area.
Furthermore, the Peter Road and Kloofendal substations will have an additional feed and will be less vulnerable to prolonged power outages.
As construction of the substation continues, City Power is undertaking to avoid any power disruptions. However, only under extreme circumstances and when absolutely necessary, power will be switched off. In the event whereby electricity has to be switched off, residents will be informed well in advance.
These and other upgrades throughout the City are a clear indication of this multi-party’s commitment to delivering quality and sustainable services to our residents.
Maintaining our electrical grid plays a significant role in driving much-needed economic growth and creating work opportunities.
Finally, I would like to thank the DA caucus as well as members of our coalition government; the IFP, ACDP, COPE, UDM and Freedom Front Plus for their continued support in delivering quality basic services to our residents.
I am also thankful for the contributions of the EFF which, although not a member of the coalition, votes with us on an issue by issue basis.
I am hopeful that the work of this pro-poor government will continue to bring Diphetogo, meaning real and fundamental change, to our residents.
