MMC Van Wyk launches start of new high density social housing project in Princess

On Thursday, 7 November 2019, I had the pleasure of the launching the start of another Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) project in Princess, Roodepoort.

The Development, at ERF 472, has been chosen to be the first social housing development in the area and will comprise of 333 building units consisting of three storey walk-up apartment blocks. It will accommodate mixed income households with a gross income ranging from R1 500 to R15 000 per month.

This project is aimed at integrating mixed-income groups to achieve social, economic, and spatial integration with an objective to provide affordable, quality social housing.

The project features will incorporate amenities & facilities such as:

  • Access Control (Guardhouse, Biometric System and Perimeter fencing);
  • Maintenance Office;
  • Post Boxes;
  • Drying yards;
  • DSTV Satellite dishes;
  • Rainwater harvesting;
  • Heat-pumps;
  • Parking area lighting; and,
  • Well-designed public open spaces.

Joshco has been active in developing new and improving existing affordable rental housing opportunities for the residents of Joburg.

The development of new and improvement of existing affordable rental housing opportunities for the residents of Johannesburg is critical for driving our economy, and stimulating the creation of much-needed jobs. 

The City is therefore committed to designing and building quality, resource efficient, economically sustainable and affordable housing, located in neighbourhoods that have easy access to transport nodes which link to job opportunities and, ultimately, better quality of life.
