Newly upgraded Nancefield substation brings stable and reliable power supply

The City of Johannesburg’s power utility, City Power, has successfully reopened the newly refurbished Nancefield substation in Soweto.

This was the culmination of a R123 million project which sought to not only modernise the substation, but to also increase its capacity.

Nancefield substation is one of the oldest City Power substations in Region G of the City of Johannesburg. Amongst the customers it supplies with electricity are large power users including 90 industrial customers in the Nancefield area, two wastewater treatment plants in Olifantsvlei and Bushkoppies and five business customers.

It also supplies power to domestic customers in Eldorado Park South, Eldorado Park Extension 3, Klipspruit West and Slovo Park.

It services approximately 3071 customers. However, with its old equipment and new customers connecting to the grid, Nancefield substation began to experience strain hence City Power commenced with the implementation of refurbishments and upgrades to the substation in the 2015/16 financial year.

With upgrades and refurbishments now completed, the new substation now boasts three new 45MVA transformers. The total capacity of the substation has improved from 90MVA to 135MVA, which allows City Power to connect new customers to its grid.

I would like to thank MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico De Jager, and City Power for their tremendous efforts in making sure the upgrades were carried out within budget and delivered on time, so that we could prevent any risk of disruptions to the power supply to our residents.

While Nancefield substation was being upgraded, we were able to electrify 1, 076 informal settlement homes in Slovo Park during the 2017/18 financial year. This made a huge difference in the lives of the residents of this low income community.

Finally, I would like to thank the DA caucus as well as members of our coalition government; the IFP, ACDP, COPE, UDM and Freedom Front Plus for their continued support in delivering quality basic services to our residents.

I am also thankful for the contributions of the EFF which, although not a member of the coalition, votes with us on an issue by issue basis.
