The DA run Drakenstein Municipality, the largest municipality in the Western Cape outside of Cape Town, has taken another step to improve connectivity for members of its community. The Municipality is rolling out public Wi-Fi access at all of its main municipal buildings, which affords members of the public 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi access per day.

Alderman Conrad Poole, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality said it was an accepted fact that access to affordable and effective broadband connectivity was a significant enabler of economic growth and sustainable development.

Making free public Wi-Fi accessible at all of Drakenstein’s main municipal buildings means that members of the community will be able to leverage that resource to pursue economic opportunity and have access to online educational material. Twenty-four Wi-Fi access points have already been rolled out and an additional 14 Wi-Fi access points will be rolled out in the near future.

Users will be taken to a landing page at AlwaysOn which will allow them to then log onto the system and use it, free of charge – for 30 minutes each day.

“Mobile data is expensive, and many of our residents cannot always afford to buy it when they need Internet access. This service relieves them of that burden and provides them with the opportunity to transact what important business they need to on the Internet free of charge, at a wide array of Drakenstein Municipality’s facilities,” said Executive Mayor Poole.
