The City’s Transport Directorate is to commence with the construction of new walkways in Garden Village in Maitland, one Cape Town’s oldest communities.
The construction of new walkways in Garden Village, Maitland, is scheduled to start during the first week of February 2020. The work will take place from 07:30 until 17:00 on weekdays, weather permitting. We foresee that the work will be done within a week, should all go as planned.
The new walkways will be constructed along Perseverance Road, Haig Avenue, Discovery Avenue, and Beatty Avenue.
‘Improving road safety in neighbourhoods and making an area easily accessible to all residents is one of our service delivery priorities. This particular area is frequented by pedestrians wanting to access the local primary school; educare; community centre and soccer club in the neighbourhood. I am very pleased that the residents in the area will soon have safe walkways to use on their way to school and other community facilities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
The cost of the project amounts to approximately R420 000 and local labour will be sourced from the community via the subcouncil jobseekers database.
Residents and road users that make use of the abovementioned roads are advised that traffic moving in both directions will be affected during the construction period. Flag personnel will regulate traffic one direction at a time.
Work areas will also be temporarily demarcated to regulate traffic flow during the day. Vehicles will be allowed to park in the demarcated area after 18:00, provided that they vacate the work areas before 06:30. Parked vehicles that obstruct the construction works will be moved or towed away.
‘The project comes with some inconvenience, and I want to thank the residents in advance for their patience. We will try to get the project done as soon as we can, and hopefully, all of us will soon reap the benefits,’ said Alderman Purchase.
