The Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Alderman Conrad Poole, today met with representatives from the German City of Neumarkt.  Drakenstein and Neumarkt established a Climate Partnership in 2014 which includes interactions between two schools in each city, exchange programs for officials and an ambitious Smart River Park project.

Planned by Drakenstein Municipality for the Paarl Arboretum, a 2.5 kilometer long park on the eastern bank of the Berg River in Paarl, the climate Smart River Park project will be developed over the next three years.

This project, currently in its planning stage, will feature a smart green classroom, a river cycling route, an outdoor amphitheater and an eco- centre which will be used for environmental education and awareness raising.

The project also includes the installation of new gates, contemporary signage, new picnic furniture and toilets as well as planting more trees and undertaking landscape improvements.

The teams from Neumarkt and Drakenstein are attending a two day project workshop in Paarl.
