There was fun in the sun aplenty at the ‘Learn to Swim’ gala held at the Faure Street swimming pool recently. Over 300 children took part in the gala and the participating schools were William Lloyd Primary, Ebenezer Primary and St. Albans. A number of juniors from the Paarl Aquarius and A and P swimming clubs also took part.
The organisers plan to make this gala an annual event.
The Learn to Swim program sees Drakenstein Municipality team up with the Principality of Monaco Foundation to teach primary school children to swim. Local coaches are used to teach the youngster and the Drakenstein. Municipality makes the municipal swimming pools, staff and lifeguards available for the coaching sessions.
The Learn to Swim program comes an end on 19 March 2020 at Faure Street swimming pool. Certificates will be handed over to all participants. South African gold medalist and swimming legend Ryk Neethling is expected to be part of the final event.
