The City of Cape Town’s Delft Housing Project has reached the 1 200 handover mark. Today, 25 February 2020, 15 beneficiaries received their homes bringing the total number of handovers to 1 227.
The City’s R185 million Delft Housing Project comprises the provision of 2 400 BNG houses in total in the Delft area. The Roosendaal Housing Project, which formed part of the first phase of development, was completed in 2016 and provided 288 beneficiaries with Breaking New Ground housing opportunities.
‘We are moving in the right direction with projects such as these as we need to deliver opportunities at scale to cater for the big housing demand in Cape Town. The provision of subsidised and affordable accommodation opportunities cannot be driven by the City alone and we need our entire society to get on board and to see how we are going to cater to the growing need.
‘I thank the community in Delft, the Project Steering Committee and the Human Settlements Directorate’s staff for their great work and dedication to improve the living conditions of our people and driving redress and opportunity. As it is the first time that beneficiaries own their own homes, we take homeowner education very seriously and our beneficiaries attend homeowner consumer workshops where they are informed of the roles and responsibilities of being a property owner. Upkeep and maintenance, for example are important responsibilities and spending time on ensuring that a property is well-maintained adds value to the asset. We also encourage beneficiaries to draw up wills to make it clear who inherits the property,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.
