The Drakenstein Municipality has, during its February Council meeting, approved a ban on the setting off of fireworks within the Drakenstein Municipal area with the exception of approved events.
This follows calls from residents, animal welfare organisations and the business sector for the Municipality to review its position in terms of a ban on the use of fireworks.
The Municipality took into consideration the risk of physical harm, acute injuries or distress to children, animals and senior citizens as well as risks to the environment and business sector. Errant fireworks could not only cause serious injuries or worse but could also cause environmental or infrastructural damage through fires.
The Executive Mayor of Drakenstein, Alderman Conrad Poole, said this move proved yet again that the Municipality cared about the safety of its residents. Mayor Poole told the council meeting that they had listened to resident’s concerns and had taken the necessary action.
The approval for the recommendation that the discharge of fireworks within the Drakenstein Municipal area no longer be allowed in terms of By-Law 1/2002 –Control of Fireworks, with the exception of approved areas was unanimous.
