“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Nelson Mandela
The West Coast District Municipality gave effect to these famous words when they donated 48 bicycles to Community Policing Forums across the West Coast on Mandela Day. These bicycles will assist law enforcement officials in patrolling streets of towns which will enable them to reduce crime in these areas. “We will never be able to root out crime in society but we must strive to create safer environments for future generations. The West Coast District Municipality recognize the need to form partnerships with key stakeholders which will enable us to play a meaningful role in creating social cohesion” said the Executive Mayor, Ald Harold Cleophas.
Constable Hennie Du Randt from the Malmesbury Police Services welcomed the initiative of the municipality. “The South African Police Service welcome the support of the broader community and we want to utilize all resources and inputs to improve our services in the areas we serve. The donation of these bicycles by the Mayor of WCDM indicates the commitment of the municipality to assist us in crime prevention. Our hope is that this partnership will inspire other role players to join forces with SAPS” said Du Randt.
During his keynote address the Mayor thanked the women and men in uniform for their tireless efforts and for their diligence in executing their duties. “Let’s make everyday a Mandela Day” was his closing remarks.
