The City of Cape Town will commence with the rehabilitation of both Erica and Belhar Drive this coming week. The City is investing R46 million in the project where key portions of Erica Drive and Belhar Drive between the Stellenbosch Arterial Road and Alabama Avenue will be rehabilitated.
The rehabilitation of this portion of Erica Drive is important as it is a major East-West link through Belhar. The road provides an alternate route to the Stellenbosch Arterial and also intersects with Symphony Way, which is a continuation of Robert Sobukwe Drive, the major North-South link to the hub of Bellville.
‘The City has prioritised the rehabilitation of this portion of Erica Drive as this road provides the residents of Belhar and Delft with an important link to the University of the Western Cape; Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the Bellville CBD, via Symphony way. The suburb will benefit from a quality road network which can cope with the high traffic this district experiences, especially considering the extensive developments in recent times. I am happy that business is slowly but surely returning to normal and that we are now able to continue with important construction projects such as this one,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
In addition to the extensive rehabilitation work the City will also be upgrading the traffic signal lights and sensors at the five major signalised intersections along this route.
Residents and road users are advised that work will be carried out from Mondays to Saturdays from 07:00 to 17:00. Construction is expected to take up to 12 months, if all goes as planned.
Traffic will be affected in both directions on Erica Drive and Belhar Drive. Traffic flow will be controlled by means of a one-way stop-and-go system or short detours during some of the works.
