The level 4 lockdown regulations allow for civil engineering for public works such as road construction and repair works. As such, the City’s Transport Directorate has started with maintenance and repairs to the sidewalks on Van Riebeeck Street between Ninth Avenue and Van der Merwe Street in Kraaifontein. The work is scheduled to continue until 30 June 2020, pending unforeseen delays and weather permitting.
The work is taking place between 07:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Saturday.
The works include the following:
- Backfilling with recycled asphalt material against the bridge fill embankments where erosion has occurred
- Excavating and removal of existing bituminous and gravel pavement layers in sidewalks
- Placing of new gravel layers in sidewalks
- Placing of new sidewalk asphalt surfacing layer by hand
- Removing existing handrails and installing new handrails where needed
- Repairing concrete screed surface of sidewalks on the railway bridge
Traffic is affected in both directions on Van Riebeeck Street. During some works, the traffic flow will be controlled by means of a one-way stop-and-go system between 08:00 and16:30. Appropriate signage will also be in place.
‘I appeal to all road users and pedestrians to adhere to the signage displayed during the construction period. Although the roads may be quieter due to the lockdown, we still advise road-users to consider alternative routes.
‘The maintenance is very important to prolong the longevity of our road infrastructure and to improve the general safety of all of those using the road network. Once completed, we will work on Van der Merwe Street to the railway bridge,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
