In support of Executive Mayor Dan Plato’s efforts to ensure that Cape Town overcomes the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Management Directorate has reprioritised and set aside R12 million from its 2019/2020 budget for immediate social humanitarian relief in Cape Town. The first recipients were from Wards 63 and 65.

Initially earmarked for small to medium scale community development initiatives, this R12 million allocation is made up of ward allocation funding. Subcouncils embarked on this reprioritisation process after considering expenditure that would be impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alderman Grant Twigg was joined by Ward Councillor, Alderman Monty Oliver when they handed over a total of 60 dry ingredient parcels including tin foods to 60 beneficiaries of the Bonnytown informal settlement in Wynberg in Ward 63. The City partnered with NGO, Honey Bun, to assist with the packing and distribution of these dry ingredient parcels.
In Ward 65, the City partnered with five NGOs, (Abantu Bafuna, Shalom Community Care, Feel Good Sessions, Klip Community Development and Eye on a child) to assist with the packing and distribution of the parcels. Ward Councillor Patricia Van der Ross joined Alderman Twigg.
‘The Urban Management Directorate together with councillors and other public stakeholders will continue these targeted social relief efforts in the communities of Masiphumelele and Ocean View this week, in order to ensure that every resident facing food insecurity due to the pandemic is assisted,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.
