The City of Cape Town and its partner Garden Cities handed over more than 200 homes to beneficiaries in the R74 million Greenville Phase 3 project over the last few months. On Thursday, 28 January 2021, 20 beneficiaries moved into their homes. Thus far, 1 599 beneficiaries have received homes in the three phases of the project.
Over the coming months, the City will continue handing over homes to qualifying beneficiaries across the metro.
The Greenville project is a partnership between the City’s Human Settlements Directorate, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Human Settlements and developer, Garden Cities.
‘This project is an exciting one, as it not only enables redress, but also makes use of alternative building technologies. We congratulate the beneficiaries who have received their homes.
Today, some of our most vulnerable residents move into their brand new homes that will last for generations to come. The City continues to drive its redress agenda to ensure that those who were previously prevented from owning property are empowered as first-time homeowners. The City remains dedicated to housing provision and will continue to make every effort to deliver more housing opportunities that will empower many more residents as property owners,’ said the City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
‘We are pleased that we are able to hand over 20 additional homes to beneficiaries, who can now look forward to starting the new year in their new homes. The City is committed to providing housing opportunities to qualifying beneficiaries on the City’s Housing Needs Register to create opportunities for them and to enable redress. We will continue to protect our projects from unlawful occupation and to fight for the rights of residents who are waiting for housing opportunities. We thank the project teams and partners for the hard work and dedication in helping us provide homes to the beneficiaries.
‘This project, across its three phases, has provided homes to 1 599 beneficiaries and we look forward to providing more opportunities over the coming months. Phase 1 and 2 had a combined cost of R247 million and Phase 2 was completed in August 2020. The Greenville development forms part of a greater catalytic housing development, which will eventually boast approximately 4 000 Breaking New Ground State-subsidised housing opportunities, social housing, financed linked houses and commercial opportunities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.
