The City is investing R3.5 million in essential upgrades and repairs, as well as to enhance the safety of residents who are living in CRUs in Uitsig.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, together with Councillor Beverley Van Reenen, recently visited the two projects in Uitsig.
The City’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) team has worked with the subcouncil and ward councillor to implement the following:
- Upgrading and replacing sewer stacks at various CRUs at a cost of R1.5 million. The project employs two Community Liaison Officers and 12 unskilled workers. The project should be completed by the end of February 2021.
- Installation of security walls between various residential units. The cost of this is R2 million and is also due for completion by end of February 2021 if all goes according to plan. This project employs one Community Liaison Officer and six unskilled workers.
‘The community of Uitsig identified various issues they are facing on a daily basis. The replacement of the sewer stacks as well as proper fencing for thoroughfares and shared spaces between various residential blocks was prioritised.
‘Subcouncils are facilitating engagements and are involved with managing upgrade projects in communities with the support of the MURP. Even during this difficult time of Covid-19, the City continues to provide employment opportunities within our communities.
‘We thank our residents for their participation and their patience while work is ongoing. We are making every effort to complete work on site as soon as possible. As a caring City, we will continue to engage with our residents so that we work together to improve the living conditions for our residents and their families,’ said Alderman Twigg.
‘Our tenants are our priority. The City has spent approximately R1 billion in maintenance at its public housing units over the past two years. It is incredibly important to understand that rental money goes toward the upkeep of rental flats and there is help on offer for those who have hit hard times and are unable to pay their full rental,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.
