Erica Drive rehabilitation nearing completion

The City of Cape Town is making good progress with the rehabilitation of Erica Drive, in Belhar. The project is set to be completed mid-year, if all goes as planned. The portion of the main road being upgraded is between Alabama Avenue and Stellenbosch Arterial.

‘The City would like to thank residents for their patience as the contractor completes the last phase of the project. Road users in the area can look forward to using the newly rehabilitated main road in a few months’ time,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.

The City’s Transport Directorate commenced with the rehabilitation of Erica Drive and Belhar Drive between Alabama Avenue and Stellenbosch Arterial in 2020. Up to R41 million was invested in this project. Once completed, this key road will improve access between Belhar and the surrounding commercial areas.

The project is currently on track and progressing well. The entire westbound carriageway between Alabama Avenue and Stellenbosch Arterial has been completed, including the paving and road marking. The construction of the eastbound carriageway is now under way.

To date, the contractor has also completed the construction of the intersections along this portion of the main road.

Thus far, local enterprises have benefitted from subcontracts amounting to a value of over R2 million (5,37%). Local residents have also benefitted through temporary job opportunities to the value of over R700 000; and this amount will increase as the project progresses.

The roadworks continue to take place on weekdays between 07:30 and 17:30 and on some Saturdays. The project will be completed within the next four months, pending any unforeseen delays.

The City will continue to ensure that the work is done with minimal impact on traffic.
