On Friday, 23 April 2021, Alderman Felicity Purchase, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, visited the construction sites to see the progress of two road rehabilitation projects currently under way in Mitchells Plain. The projects commenced in March 2021 and will be completed in the coming months.
The City has invested over R25 million in both of these projects and aims to complete the road works by July 2021.
The work on both upgrade projects entails removing the old asphalt and replacing it with a new layer. In Weltevreden Road, the project team has also had to repair and raise gravel shoulders to tie into the new surface level.
‘The upgrade of these roads forms part of our efforts to address road maintenance in Mitchells Plain in a planned manner. These two roads form a key part of the road network in the area, Weltevreden Road being a link between Mitchells Plain and Phillippi and Highlands Drive, which runs through Lenteguer and surrounding areas and provides easy access to the R300.’
‘We understand that these roadworks come with a level of inconvenience. We therefore thank all residents for their patience thus far and for their cooperation as we aim to complete the necessary works,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport Alderman Purchase
