The City of Cape Town has invested R25,4 million to resurface and rehabilitate roads in Khayelitsha for the period 1 July 2020 to date. Some of the projects have been completed, and others are either under way, or in the planning phase.

All-in-all, the projects cover a distance of 9 160 metres in areas such as Philippi East, Browns Farm, Nonqubela, Tafelsig, and Samora Machel.

‘Every financial year, the City’s Transport Directorate allocates a budget for road maintenance projects for each area across Cape Town. I am proud to say that the team for the Khayelitsha area has excelled, despite the delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and unrest and vandalism at some of the sites where roadworks had to be temporarily stopped in the interest of the safety of the contractors and workers. We are focused and committed to keep on delivering services to communities, and request residents to please support these projects where they are ongoing, or due to commence soon,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase

‘We are excited to see all of these projects completed so that residents and road users can benefit from the improvements. Cape Town’s road network is one of the city’s biggest assets – without roads we cannot travel to work, school, or hospital; neither can we transport goods. Thus, a well-developed road network is critical for every person living and working in Cape Town. We are, therefore, conducting regular planned maintenance and improvements to keep the road network in a good condition,’ said Alderman Purchase.
