Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Executive Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, together with Senior Professional Golf Tour South Africa handed over an amount of R105 000 to the SPCA in Uitenhage today.
This donation follows a call that was done by the Executive Mayor for all residents and private
businesses to support SPCA with their needs in the beginning of the year. Bhanga said, “It is so
humbling to note that when we make a call to our communities they listen and answer, because I strongly believe that the co-existence of people and animals is vital. The same care that we provide for our residents is also needed by animals. For instance some of these animals need to be adopted and taken care of by us as human beings.”
Mayor commended the SPCA for doing a great job in ensuring that the pound is operational and meets all the required standards from the limited resources that they have.
“It is for this reason that I call all the residents and businesses to come forward and continue to
support the tremendous work that is being done by SPCA staff members,” said Mayor Bhanga.
SPCA plays a huge role as an NMBM service provider that runs the animal pound and takes care of the well-being of the animals. SPCA chairperson, Deidre Swift, shared words of gratitude saying, “We have never been nominated as a beneficiary of a Council driven fundraising event. This donation is absolutely phenominal and we are so grateful to the Executive Mayor for his unwavering support and commitment to support the SPCA. With this R105 000 we will be able to pay the Vet and medical supplies for the animals. It is a great relief for us,” she said.
The Executive Mayor vowed to monitor an amount of R700 000 that has been allocated to NMBM Public Health directorate, to revamp the SPCA facilities in 2021/22 budget. Members of the public who happen to come across stray animals, especially the domestic ones, are encouraged to take them to the nearest vet or Animal welfare society so that they can be transferred to the SPCA.
