Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on Wednesday handed over title deeds to government subsidy house owners in Motherwell Nu 29.

Today’s handover was a start of a Tittle Deed handover programme that will focus on the people who have been living in Nu 29 and the surrounding areas.

Motherwell Nu 29 is made of housing beneficiaries that were moved from stressed areas like New Brighton and KwaZakhele as early as 1999.

The City currently has got 6000 title deeds ready for collection. The first day of the Motherwell Nu 29 handover project saw 50 people including the elderly receive their long outstanding title deeds. The 50 handed over today forms part of more than 500 title deeds that will be handed over in Nu 29 area.

When Nu 29 handover is complete, the project will move to Ikamvelihle, an area also in Motherwell that has been who were moved from different areas of the City and the nearby peri-urban farms. KwaNobuhle will be the next area after Ikamvelihle.

The Human Settlements Directorate has dedicated every Wednesday as a day to handover title
deeds. A beneficiary, Mandlanandile Koliti who could not contain her excitement said: “We’ve been waiting for these documents for years. My dignity is restored because I own a property officially.”

NMBM Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Masixole Zinto said the project was about restoring dignity.

“We have people who have been waiting for their title deeds for more than 15 years. We are talking about people who have never owned a formal property except for a shack erected on an old cemetery. Through this programme we are saying to our people, the wait is over,” said Councillor Zinto.
