The City of Cape Town recently received the 2021 African PMO (Project Management Office) of the Year Award from the Global PMO Alliance. This competition recognises excellence and value creation in project, programme and portfolio management.
First off, the City’s Corporate Project, Programme and Portfolio Management Department (C3PM) won the South African leg of the competition, and now the C3PM holds the top position in Africa.
The City of Cape Town is the first public sector entity within South Africa to win this award.
‘It has been an amazing journey for the team, with much credit owing to the City’s Corporate Services Directorate for the effort and leadership provided. C3PM is one of four finalists vying for the 2021 World PMO of the Year Award and is up against the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific PMO winners. Not many know just how much of an integral part this PMO team plays to ensure that the City’s major projects materialise. I am happy that this hardworking team can be recognised at this level for all the solid strategy and planning they provide from behind the scenes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Sharon Cottle.
The winner of the 2021 World PMO of the Year Award will be announced on 11 November 2021.
One of the most exciting contributions C3PM made over the past year was its role in the two mass vaccination site projects at both the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the Athlone Stadium. The City’s project management specialists were at the heart of the planning and design of both of these facilities.
The City worked closely with the Western Cape Government and in the case of the CTICC facility, with role-players from the private sector.
These two projects have both been recognised as sterling examples of how the City is managing a hugely successful collaboration between different spheres of government and the private sector via its project management role.
The 2021 African PMO of the Year Award from the Global PMO Alliance is significant as it recognises PMOs that have demonstrated superior organisational project, programme and portfolio management abilities. The award specifically looked at how the City’s PMO ultimately supported the successful implementation of projects aligned to the municipality’s strategic goals.
