The City of Cape Town has issued more than 10 million masks and gloves combined to City essential staff since March 2020, as the City continues to prioritise Covid-19 specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff on the front line of service delivery. All City Covid-19 related expenditure is done in an open and transparent manner to ensure that the spend complies with all legal provisions in an accountable manner.
More than 6 059 842 gloves, 4 265 100 face masks (N95, FFP2, FFP1, cloth and face shields) and 1 463 382 units of hand sanitiser, soap, bleach and anti-bacterial liquid were issued to frontline staff between 16 March 2020 and 15 October 2021. The City continues to ensure that basic services are provided to residents, while protecting residents and staff.
‘The City has ensured that essential staff and members of the public were protected since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, and we have tried our absolute best to deliver uninterrupted service to residents as far as possible. We thank our residents for their patience and support during this unprecedented time for all of us.
‘The City follows a transparent procurement process and is complying strictly to the National Treasury (NT) Emergency Procurement Guidelines. The City has a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, and staff are required to sign declarations of interest as part of the City’s measures to ensure that processes are ethical and legal,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance and Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson.
