City revs up its support for Motorsport events

On Saturday 20 November 2021, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis joined hundreds of people who gathered at the Killarney Motor Racing Complex for the annual Bragging Rights event supported by the City of Cape Town.  It is one of several motorsport events, sponsored by the City, happening until the end of June 2022.

Featuring some of the country’s top drag racers, spinners, drifters and motorcyclists, Bragging Rights is the biggest event to take place at Killarney since the outbreak of Covid-19.

The three-in-one blockbuster event was an entertaining affair for petrolheads who love big engines and tyre smoke.

It was a battle to determine who will be crowned the best in the country in the different categories including drifting and competitive spinning among others.

The event also forms part of the City’s partnership with Killarney to cater for the spinning and drifting needs of Cape Town’s car enthusiasts.

Bragging Rights is one of several events the City is sponsoring through its event support process over the coming months.

‘The City of Cape Town is committed to working with all roleplayers in the motorsports industry, to work towards building a sustainable stream of events that will be inclusive of the various classes of racing.  The City’s support for motorsport is highlighted by the increased financial support for events, which have been hosted here at Killarney and other venues across the metro,’ said the City Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Before the pandemic, annually racing at Killarney contributed R357 million to Cape Town’s economy.

Having taken a knock because of Covid-19, an increase in the number of events hosted at the venue could assist in the facilities economic recovery.

Recently, the City’s Special Events Committee approved financial support for the popular Robot Racing, taking place at Killarney every week, until the end of June.

The City is also supporting the Cape Motorsport Festival – an event featuring 50 local and international teams taking part in a 9-hour endurance race – next month.

Additionally, the City is backing Streetmania – an event geared towards local street races, drifters and spinners – to take place early next year.

‘The City’s strategy for support of motorsport events is based not only to ensure economic growth but also catered towards ensuring road safety. It provides us with the opportunity to provide a platform where petrolheads can participate in their favourite sport in a safe and legal environment. We want them to take it away from the streets and into a more safe space to ensure we protect lives.’
