The Department of Roads and Transport is pleased that it was able to contribute
towards the City’s relief efforts following the heavy rainfall that caused flooding in some parts of Tshwane.
A total of 18 busses were made available to ferry flood victims to various places of
safety such as community halls and churches.
Mamelodi township, which was one of the most affected, was assisted with 16 busses
while Hammanskraal received two busses. Two busses were also made available to transport learners from their temporary residences to schools.
We remain committed to working together with the City’s departments of Social
Development and Community Services, Community Safety as well as Emergency
Services to assist flood victims.
In my capacity as Member of Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, I wish to
applaud everyone who took part in the ferrying operations, especially the bus drivers
and Tshwane Bus Services management who had to respond promptly during an
emergency.
A total of 2 340 kms was covered during this rescue mission.
The City reacted fast to the flooding incidents by deploying a multi-departmental
team to assist residents. Even though our resources are limited and stretched,
the Department of Roads and Transport together with its sister departments,
will always ensure that our communities are safe.
