Sweeping renewal at Strandfontein Pavilion

12 Mar 2022 in Where We Govern

On Saturday, Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis was at Strandfontein Pavilion as part of our citywide Clean-Up Campaign. The visit is also to highlight the upgrade plans for the Strandfontein Pavilion. He was joined by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning & Environment, Eddie Andrews, ward councillors and residents.

He visited the pavilion during my campaign to become Mayor and was shocked to see how it has deteriorated. There is so much potential for Strandfontein Pavilion.

We’ve allocated R2 million in the January Adjustment budget for the planning phase of the rebuilding of the Pavilion.

Following that, we are allocating R40 million in the coming financial year to begin a broader development initiative.

Earlier this month, Eddie Andrews visited the Standfontein Pavilion with the City’s Urban Planning and Coastal Management department for an overview of the phases of planning and the vision that will be implemented for the area.

Part of creating civic pride in our Mother City is ensuring all communities have functional and quality spaces. I believe that Strandfontein Pavilion can be one of those spaces.

Cape Town is known for its scenic coastline, and Blue Flag beaches. Strandfontein is one of them. It is one of 10 Blue Flag beaches along the Cape Town coastline.

The EPWP Solid Waste workers clean the Pavilion and the shore on a daily basis to maintain the Blue Flag status of this beach.

However, up in the dunes there were plastic items, such as bottles and also discarded face masks. It is important that we all play our role in keeping our public spaces clean.

Last month we launched a major city-wide Clean-Up Campaign and have run clean-up operations in several communities over recent weeks. Our hope is that residents take joint responsibility for the cleanliness of our city.
