City celebrates women in construction, hands over title deeds

29 Aug 2022 in Where We Govern

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, met with women working in the construction industry in Khayelitsha today, 29 August 2022, to celebrate the end of Women’s Month with the Harare Infill housing project’s woman-led contractor team. Title deeds were also handed over to five elderly women.

‘The built environment is constantly changing and the development of small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) is critical in building and advancing innovation within the industry. The City is already showing a good footprint where women are concerned. Some of the best performing housing projects within the metro, including this one, are run by women.

‘Despite the challenge of unlawful occupation attempts we have faced at this project, we are pleased that construction is progressing well on site. This project will provide opportunities to 900 qualifying beneficiaries, which includes 417 opportunities in Phase 1 and 483 homes in Phase 2. It is expected to be completed in April 2023, if all goes as planned. It was an honour to hand over title deeds as part of today’s celebrations.

‘Today we celebrate the women who have changed and continue to change the face of construction. We thank you for your role in building our city,’ said Councillor Booi.

Beneficiaries of all City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and the City’s Housing Needs Register to ensure that housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
