The City of Cape Town currently has a total of 3 530 social housing units. In addition to this there are still a number of projects for social housing under development. The City’s Pine Road project is going to add 204 housing units and plans to finalise the project’s contractor are currently ongoing.
On average, the rental for social housing units in Cape Town sit at as low as R650 per month for bachelor apartments and up to R3 900 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. This highlights that the city of Cape Town is committed to ensuring and providing affordable and inclusive social housing for its residents.

As the Chairperson of the Human Settlements’ Standing Committee, I will in the coming days ensure that the Committee conducts oversight inspections to social housing developments in Cape Town and across the Western Cape in order to evaluate their progress.
