09 Nov 2022 in Where We Govern

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department have started a planning process to upgrade the Blue Downs sports facility into a regional recreation hub. Community members, groups and interested parties have the opportunity to comment and submit proposals until 8 December 2022.

A planning process is currently under way to upgrade the facility, which comprises of the Malibu sports ground, Blue Downs athletics track and the Blue Downs swimming pool, into a regional recreation hub and an integrated recreation facility.

The infrastructure plan  identified the need for a sports and recreation facility that will provide communities  with access to quality formal sports infrastructure, informal sports areas, as well as  areas that provide for active and passive recreation.

In addition to the above, a site has been identified that will be developed as a regional recreation hub.

Key interventions in the development plan includes easy access and parking, a public plaza space, a swimming pool and recreation area and a golf driving range, amongst other.

‘The development of the sports facility in Blue Downs  into an integrated and well connected recreational hub will be of great benefit to the community, especially young people and learners.  Once developed and upgraded community members will have a great outdoor space to relax, participate in various sporting codes and recreational activities. It is for this reason that it’s important for members of the community and interested groups to participate in the planning process and submit proposals,’  said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

The public and interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input to the City from 8 November 2022 to 8 December 2022.

Comments, input or recommendations can be submitted via email to Bluedowns.rrh@capetown.gov.za
