Leading South Africa into a New Era of Governance

For the first time in history, the Democratic Alliance is part of the national government. With the ANC dropping below 40% in the recent elections, the DA plays a crucial role in stabilising national government and safeguarding South Africa’s future.

As the anchor party in the Government of National Unity (GNU), we are committed to rescuing our nation and bringing the expertise gained from 24 years of DA governance to serve all South Africans.

Our Role in the GNU

The DA is actively shaping the future of South Africa through its participation in the Government of National Unity (GNU). As a leading force in opposition, the DA now holds six Cabinet portfolios, with DA ministers exercising real ministerial power and oversight.

Additionally, six portfolios led by ANC ministers are now influenced by DA Deputy Ministers. With a DA Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly and one of the three House Chairpersonships under DA control, parliamentary management is no longer monopolised by the ANC. The DA’s involvement ensures stronger oversight and transformative change from within the national government.

The DA operates within 16 portfolios of National Government:

  • Home Affairs – DA Minister
  • Agriculture – DA Minister
  • Public Works, Infrastructure – DA Minister
  • Basic Education – DA Minister
  • Communications & Digital Technology – DA Minister
  • Environment, Forestry & Fisheries – DA Minister
  • Finance – DA Deputy Minister
  • Water & Sanitation – DA Deputy Minister
  • Higher Education – DA Deputy Minister
  • Electricity – DA Deputy Minister
  • Trade, Industry and Competition – DA Deputy Minister
  • Small Business Development – DA Deputy Minister
  • Social Development – DA Chairperson in Parliament
  • Water & Sanitation – DA Chairperson in Parliament
  • Sports, Arts & Culture – DA Chairperson in Parliament
  • Police – DA Chairperson in Parliament
  • Public Service & Administration – DA Chairperson in Parliament

The Challenges Ahead

There is much to be done to rescue South Africa, but the DA is now in its strongest position ever to bring about meaningful change and hold the government to account.

South Africa faces significant challenges: the highest unemployment rates globally, rampant crime, decaying infrastructure, and endemic corruption. These issues won’t be solved overnight, but with sustained hard work, cooperation, and the DA’s unwavering commitment, we will make a difference.
