Dr Dion George

Federal Finance Chairperson

Dion George attended Wits University. After completing his undergraduate degree, he entered the financial services industry where he built his career. During this time he was also a community activist; this later prompted his political career.

He further acquired a BA (Hons), MBA (Wits) and DBL (Economics) degrees and an advanced certificate in Municipal Governance. His MBA research report received the Investec Securities Prize for the Best Research in the Field of Investments. He also completed a Certificate Programme in Leadership Coaching and the Harvard Negotiation Course.  

Dion joined the Democratic Party (DP) in 1995 and, in 2005, was elected chairman of the DA branch in Sandown, Sandton.

After the 2006 municipal elections, he served the City of Johannesburg as a PR councillor on various committees, including Housing, Finance, Economic Development and Municipal Accounts.

From 2008 to 2015, he was a member of Parliament and served as shadow minister of Finance, whip in the National Assembly and trustee of the Political Office Bearers’ Pension Fund. He resumed his private sector career in finance in 2015.

In 2023, he was elected to serve yet another term as federal finance chairperson.
