Michael Waters

Deputy Federal Chairperson, MP

Michael Waters is originally from England but migrated with his family to South Africa in 1972. He completed a diploma in Human Resources at WITS Technikon.

Michael joined the Democratic Party in 1989 and held a number of positions in the youth structure of the party and was elected as the youth president in 1994.

He was elected to Parliament in 1999 and was re-elected in 2004. Since his election to Parliament, Michael has served as a spokesperson for several portfolios, such as the Post Office, Home Affairs, Public Service and Administration, HIV/AIDS, Social Development and his current portfolio, Child Abuse and Health.

In 2009, Michael was re-elected to Parliament once again and is currently the DA’s deputy chief whip in the National Assembly, in addition to being one of the DA’s three deputy federal chairpersons.
