The DA acknowledges that illegal immigration undermines the rule of law, impacts state resources and capacity, and reduces public trust. However, the DA firmly rejects the scapegoating of migrants or the use of violence against them.
The DA’s position on addressing illegal immigration is clear. Immigration laws must be applied and enforced fairly, consistently, and without fear or favour. While upholding the Constitution, there needs to be protection of human rights, dignity, and equality for everyone within our borders.
This DA policy position paper sets out the Party’s approach to restoring order to the immigration system, which includes:
- · Enforcing the Immigration Act.
- · Strengthening border security through modern technology and other mechanisms.
- · Implementing a Digital ID system linked to an Intelligent Population Register (IPR).
- · Continuing Operation New Broom.
- · Adequately resourcing the Border Management Authority (BMA).
- · Incentivising self-deportation.
- · Applying the First Safe Country Principle.
- Improving the processing of Refugee Appeals
