The DA calls for a forensic investigation into the Commission of Gender Equality (CGE) after damning allegations that it continued to pay former commissioners salaries while they were no longer in office.

According to the Auditor General’s report the CGE was found to have further paid Commissioners for work that could not be verified to have taken place to the tune of R2 381 665.

In the Portfolio Committee the Chairperson of the CGE, Ms. Tamara Mathebula, stated that she had not seen or authorized the payments in question, which was questioned by members of the Portfolio Committee as her signature had been appended on the report.

As South Africa continues to grapple with the scourge of gender-based violence it is imperative that institutions like the CGE do not collapse under corruption. The DA will continue to push for accountability as well as stand against activities that aim to dent the work of this important chapter 9 institution.
