The DA calls on the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, to institute an audit of all the National School Nutrition Programmes (NSNP) in all the provinces, after learners in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the Eastern Cape have been forced to go hungry because those Departments failed to ensure schools had food to provide meals.

On the heels of the chaos in KZN which left 30 000 learners at 540 schools without meals, 4 982 schools in the Eastern Cape haven’t provided their learners with meals due to administrative failures to pay schools and service providers.

While some schools have indicated that they’re received partial payment, the crisis is far from over.

It is becoming increasingly clear that some of the provinces are not capable of effectively managing this crucial programme, and we need to know which other programmes are in jeopardy as a matter of urgency if we are to prevent learners in other provinces from going hungry.
