Residents in the Khikhi and NY61 areas of Gugulethu are being connected to the electricity grid. This electrification project will enhance the residents’ living conditions as well as the safety of community members who can now reduce their dependence on using open flames. Read more below:
Some 574 applications for electrification in Khikhi and NY61 had been submitted and 173 connections were switched on in December 2022. The remainder of 401 beneficiaries have been electrified and the contractor is currently completing the switch on process.
In City-supplied areas and on City-owned land, where it is possible to do so, almost all older informal settlements in the metro have been connected to electricity. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen, and other dignitaries attended a recent switch on in the area.
‘We are so pleased to be switching on the remaining 401 planned connections in this area. The City set aside almost R4,5 million to ensure the success of this project and it is gratifying to see it become a reality. Families in this community can now feel more secure with access to the basic electricity services which the City provides.
‘In keeping with our theme this year of Doing More, I am delighted to announce that in this financial year since July 2022, the City electrified more than 2 012 homes. These connections to the electricity grid include formal subsidised housing, informal settlements, infills and backyarder connections for informal and backyarder connections, at a cost of approximately R24 million. Many thousands of people have benefitted from these projects and our ongoing commitment to always doing more is underscored by our investment in infrastructure which makes life easier for residents and unlocks opportunities for their children to thrive,’ said Councillor Van Reenen.
