- The report into the docking of the Russian cargo vessel – Lady R – is due for submission today.
- The investigation was sparked by claims that ammunition was smuggled onboard the vessel when it docked in Simon’s Town in December.
- The DA will take the necessary steps to ensure accountability prevails, should the complete Lady R report not be made public.

Yesterday’s revelation by Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya regarding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to selectively release sections of the Lady R report is deeply concerning.
This comes after the government made it clear that the entire report would not be made public, raising questions about transparency and accountability.
Despite the government’s repeated claims that nothing illegal was loaded onto Lady R, their refusal to release the full report raises suspicions and fuels doubts about their intentions. It is imperative that they do not hide behind a cloak of secrecy, but instead provide clarity to the South African public and the international community.
The credibility of the report hinges on its complete publication. Even if released in its entirety, scepticism may persist if it conveniently fails to address critical aspects. The government’s handling of this matter has been perceived as grossly incompetent, tarnishing the country’s reputation.
President Ramaphosa’s perceived lacklustre approach to various crises facing the nation has become emblematic of his administration.
The DA strongly condemns the government’s attempt to selectively disclose only portions of the report. We demand full transparency, insisting that the public deserves closure on this matter. The DA emphasises that should the complete Lady R report not be made public, we will take necessary steps to ensure accountability prevails.
The party’s commitment to transparency and accountability remains steadfast, and we pledge to hold those in power accountable for their actions.
