The Democratic Alliance (DA) extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and communities affected by the tragic sinking of the MFV Lepanto off the coast of Cape Town. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the 11 fishermen who are lost at sea.

We acknowledge the invaluable contribution of traditional fishing communities to the Western Cape’s economy and cultural heritage. The DA recognises the hardships and dangers faced by these communities, and we are committed to supporting them in every possible way. The loss of these fishermen is a profound tragedy that underscores the risks they bravely undertake to sustain their livelihoods and provide for their families.

The DA pledges to continue working closely with all relevant authorities, including the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), to support the investigation into the cause of this devastating incident. We will also advocate for measures to enhance the safety and well-being of all fishermen.

Our gratitude goes out to the rescue organisations, nearby vessels, and all individuals involved in the search and rescue operations. Their dedication and swift response are deeply appreciated.
