The Democratic Alliance (DA) commends the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the DA’s Dr Dion George, for his participation at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. See photo here.

Minister George is attending the prestigious international event as an invited guest of President Cyril Ramaphosa, reflecting the trust and confidence placed in him to represent South Africa on the global stage.

Minister George’s engagement on climate change, one of the most pressing complexities of our time, is both timely and critical. His commitment to showcasing the Government of National Unity (GNU) is a testament to his dedication to fostering cooperative governance and driving forward solutions that benefit not only our nation but the global community.

We recognise the immense effort Minister George has already made, including the significant number of bilateral discussions he is scheduled to undertake during the Assembly. These dialogues are invaluable for positioning South Africa as a leader in environmental stewardship and in furthering multilateral cooperation on climate issues.

The DA stands firmly behind Minister George in his endeavours at the UNGA. We look forward to his leadership at COP29 in Baku in November as we grapple with the vital matter of climate finance for mitigation, adaptation and insurance.
