The DA welcomes the arrest of two Mozambican nationals allegedly linked to the murder of Ernst and Dina Marais in the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park last month. These arrests will bring a measure of relief to the Marais family and demonstrate that those who commit violent crimes in our national parks will be pursued and brought to justice.

The couple, residents of Mossel Bay, were visiting Crooks Corner – the remote tripoint where South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique meet – when they were attacked and their vehicle stolen. Their bodies were discovered in a nearby river the following day, in an incident that shocked the nation and deeply saddened all who value South Africa’s protected areas.

The arrests are the result of effective collaboration between SANParks, the South African Police Service, the Wildlife Justice Commission, and Mozambican authorities. Following the recovery of the stolen vehicle in Chókwè, Mozambique, investigators were able to identify and apprehend two suspects whom police have confirmed are positively linked to the murders.

The DA commends all those involved in the investigation, including Minister Willie Aucamp, for their swift and coordinated response. This case highlights the importance of strong cross-border cooperation in combating crime and ensuring accountability.

South Africa’s national parks are places of refuge for nature and people alike. Criminality, particularly violence of this nature, cannot be allowed to take root within them. Visitors must be able to enjoy these spaces with confidence, knowing that their safety remains a priority.

The Marais family conveyed to the Minister that the greatest tragedy beyond the loss of Ernst and Dina would be if people were discouraged from visiting the park they loved so dearly. We hope that the successful progress of this investigation will reassure visitors and reinforce confidence in the Kruger National Park as one of South Africa’s most treasured destinations.
