We must all save water

29 Jan 2018 in Where We Govern

The DA-led coalition Council in Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality is deeply concerned about the low water levels in various reservoirs and dams which are contributing towards the current water shortages within the municipality.
The lack of rainfall and recent heat wave that increased the water usage have contributed significantly towards the shortage.
We can confirm that the Donkerpoort Dam that supplies Modimolle/Phagameng is currently at less than 23% capacity. At our current usage of 5.5 megalitres a day, it is probable that we will reach day zero in less than 3 months.
The Welgevonden dam (Frikkie Geyser) that supplies the residents in Mookgophong is only at 40% capacity whilst the current usage is 2, 5 megalitres a day.
As the municipality, we would like to urge all our communities to implement water saving measures in their homes, schools and businesses.
Residents are encouraged to ensure that taps are closed when not in use and report or repair leaks as soon as possible to avoid any unnecessary wastage.
We are also appealing to the residents to only water gardens and wash cars using potable water.
We will also dispatch water tankers to various communities which are currently without water.
We will monitor the situation closely and stringent water restrictions will be implemented shortly by the municipality, to ensure that we avert the possibility of an undesirable water situation.
