The DA-led Overstrand municipality has started on with phase 2 of the implementation of a multi-purpose sport facility in the village of Hawston.
The new facility will provide residents of the district access to netball and tennis courts, a cricket oval, two soccer fields (of which one will have a synthetic turf), a new track to boost athletics, a golf driving range, a rugby field and an indoor sport centre with club house and pavilion.
The project started in 2012 and after years of waiting and planning the three-phase R55 million development master plan is now being rolled out. A total of R14 million was allocated to phase 1 and 2 and funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant. The remaining phases will be undertaken when funding becomes available.
The construction of the netball and tennis courts has already started and will be completed by the end of March 2020 as part of phase one. The implementation of phase 2 started at the beginning of March 2020 and if all goes well, the netball and tennis change rooms, a soccer field, the athletic track and rugby field will be completed by the end of June 2020.
The multi-purpose centre will be able to cater for the various sporting events and tournaments throughout the whole Overberg District.
The Overstand Executive Mayour, Dudley Coetzee, said the following about this project “Let us use sport as driver for positive change in our communities.’’ Western Cape MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sports Anroux Marais said that the Hawston Sport Facility was set to boost economic activity in the region.
